Form & Function

This project is about the relationship between form and function as a central architectural theme. It concerns whether the building's form should be independent of its function or not. Also, it creates awareness of truth with whatever circumstances the designer is given, and promotes a type of "function beauty". As this project examines the method and process of idea generation through conceptual combinations as well.

Movement analogy

This project challenged us to take three everyday objects and analyze their mechanics, and with that create a simple movement diagram for us to use in our bridges. The goal of these objects is to help us with the mechanism of our opening for the bridge.

Mechanism

For my mechanism, inspired by a simple umbrella, I turned it upside down and changed it to fit my bridge.

The usual part that slides up and down the umbrella post is now sliding in an opening I created on members of the portion of the road that would be lifted. Additionally, in order to "fold" the mechanism, I have a pulley string system lifting up the side of one of the joints of the "umbrella".
